What is B.Arch?

The Bachelor of Architecture is the title for an architecture undergraduate degree (B.Arch.). The five-year, full-time programme covers a range of subjects, including Basic Design, Architectural History, Architectural Drawing and Graphics, Architectural Design, Landscape Design, Building Services, Theory of Structures, Professional Practice, and Advanced Building Technology and Materials.

Students who want to pursue BArch must have completed at least their 10+2 with a recognised board or a diploma from a recognised university with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 50%. To gain admission and be chosen for the BArch course, students who have met the eligibility requirements must pass an entrance exam like NATA or JEE Mains.

B.ARCH AS A CAREER:

The primary option is to work as an independent design consultant, providing design services to homeowners, builders, corporations, and the government. To do so, one must first work as a design architect for a good architectural firm for about 5 years before becoming an independent designer.

If one acquires the skill set of the entire project development value chain, one can also become a developer/builder. I strongly advise architects to pursue this path because the industry requires quality professionals with a passion for design. In this case, however, you cannot be a registered architect.

The boom in the building and design industries has greatly increased career opportunities for architects. They are required by numerous public and private organisations. You can work in the fields of construction, urban planning, urban development corporations, public works departments, interior design, etc.

There are many employment options for architects in architecture firms, academic institutions, consulting firms, etc. Graduates in architecture can find lucrative careers and jobs in the global market, particularly in the USA, Australia, and Dubai.

Architects can work both in an office and on a construction site. They are employed as designers by construction companies. Depending on your skills, profile, and experience, you can also work independently and make a living through consulting fees.

Eligibility for a bachelor's in architecture:

Students who wish to be admitted to the Bachelor of Architecture programme must meet certain requirements. The steps for meeting the eligibility requirements are as follows:

• Students applying for admission to the B. Arch programme must have earned a 10+2 diploma from a recognised board with mathematics as the primary subject.
• The students' final qualifying exam grade must have been at least 50% overall.
• Students may also apply for admission to the B. Arch programme if they have completed a diploma in a relevant field from an accredited university with at least a 50% overall grade point average.
• Valid score on the JEE Paper II or National Aptitude Test in Architecture (NATA) administered by the Council of Architecture.
