All candidates seeking for admission must indicate their category in the application form. Candidates from the Economically Backward Section, Other Backward Classes - Non-Creamy Layer, Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, and Foreign Nationals are given priority in admission to the courses.

According to the NID DAT 2023 Reservation Policy, the seats for the Bachelor of Design course are divided into the following categories:

National Institute of Design reserves a portion of its seats for OBC (NCL), SC/ST, and PwD applicants. Furthermore, 10% of its B.Des/GDPD and M.Des seats are designated for the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) in all campuses accepting NID DAT 2023 applications.

Following the implementation of the new 10% EWS reservation, the following category-wise allocation of seats for the Master of Design programme is expected:
