“Manufacturers in dire need of trained engineers”
Guru Nanak Dev University has started a series of workshops, lectures, and new courses in conjunction with industry specialists to teach and generate skilled workers for the textile sector in an effort to restore the city's struggling knitting/spinning and textile industries.
The National Technical Textiles Mission (NTTM), led by the Ministry of Textile, the Government of India, and involving the Department of Apparel and Textile Technology (DATT) at Guru Nanak Dev University, aims to advance four essential aspects of technical textiles: research, innovation, and development; promotion and market development; education, skilling and training; and export promotion.
“One of the major factors affecting the growth of technical textiles in the country is the lack of quality manpower, specially technically educated and trained engineers and professionals, and highly skilled workmen, both for manufacturing and application areas of technical textiles. Therefore, in order to become a world leader and pioneer in the field of technical textiles in the next decade, India has to lay focused emphasis on creating an effective knowledge and world-class skill ecosystem,” highlighted Dr Varinder Kaur, department head, DATT, GNDU.
The objective of the education, skilling, and training component is to raise the quality of technical textiles education of aspiring engineers in order to assure a sufficient pool of talent in the industry.
The Punjab State Council for Science and Technology, the CII in Punjab, the Textile Industry Associations of Punjab, and the Technology Enabling Center at Panjab University were partners with DATT in organizing the previous technical textiles conference.
A four-year BTech degree program in technical textiles will begin in 2023–24 academic sessions in addition to the BTech degree program in textile processing technology that is already in place as a result of discussions with professionals from industry and academia.
The course content is created to meet the needs of the moment. The objective is to make Guru Nanak Dev institution the first and only institution in India to provide this program under the education, skilling, and training component.
