India Craft Week and Pearl Academy Unite To Honor Craftspeople And Artisans

The artistic pieces on display at the Pearl Academy Exhibition Center were inspired by an appreciation of the value of traditional crafts in contemporary design.

 

Pearl Academy, a creative education institute, has partnered with India Craft Week (ICW) as a knowledge partner for the fourth iteration of the annual event. The partnership, according to a statement from the organization, aims to honor, empower, and improve the livelihoods of Indian artisans and craftspeople.

Several homegrown and international brands, institutions, designers, craftspersons, and artisans attended the four-day event, which aimed to integrate art, design, and culture.

The Pearl Academy Exhibition Center displayed creative works rooted in understanding the importance of traditional crafts in the modern design process on the first day of the four-day event. Students who spent time researching and documenting various traditional Indian crafts displayed their work at the exhibition center.

Aditi Srivastava, president, Pearl Academy, highlights that, at Pearl Academy, everyone strongly believes that a deeper knowledge of craft, history, and culture, incorporated into the design curriculum can lead to enhanced creativity and a secure future in sustainable design.

 

He also emphasizes how important it is for students to learn from tradition while also innovating, and that the institute's goal is to equip design students with the ability to think locally while acting globally.

Srivastava also mentions that the School of Fashion and Design at Pearl Academy's Dean Antonio Maurizio Grioli and himself had organized a number of other symposiums at ICW that covered subjects like the 4Ps of crafts and crafts in fashion.

The agenda for ICW also included panel discussions on topics like "The Role of Traditional Crafts in Modern Interiors and Architecture" and more, moderated by individuals like Ramesh Menon, founder of Save The Loom, Asha Sairam, principal of Lotus, Sanjay Nigam, founder of the India Fashion Awards, and UP Singh, secretary of textiles for the Government of India.

The president of Pearl Academy, and the dean of Pearl Academy's school of fashion and design, both led a number of other symposiums that ICW also hosted. These symposiums focused on issues like crafts in fashion and the 4Ps of crafts. The opportunity to participate in workshops on "sanjhi art," "molela clay art," "kutch embroidery," and clay pottery is also available to attendees.

Somesh Singh, Founder of ICW and Crafts Village says that interiors and architecture are area that requires intervention in terms of sustainable homes and cities, which were the core of urban planning using indigenous crafts and local materials.

He also points out how unfortunate it is that new materials, techniques, and alienated materials have permeated, resulting in a non-sustainable outlook for cities and homes. He also highlighted that issues need to be studied again and again and to consider Craft from an engineering and technological standpoint.
