The Government of India's Ministry of Textiles created NIFT in 1986. The NIFT Act of the Indian Parliament designated it as a statutory institute in 2006 and gave it the authority to award its own degree. NIFT is among the most prestigious colleges and considered to be among the No.1 in the Top 15 Design Colleges in India.

The Ministry of Textiles and NIFT are working together to develop a sizing chart specifically for India.

In collaboration with NIFT, a new digital disruptive pattern camouflage uniform was developed for the Indian Army in 2022.

 

 

About NIFT:

There are now 18 campuses for NIFT all around the nation. In 1986, the first campus opened in Haus Khaz, New Delhi. Bengaluru's campus was established in 1997 after the campuses in Chennai, Kolkata, Gandhinagar, Hyderabad, and Mumbai were established in 1995. The Bhopal campus opened in June 2008, followed by campuses in Bhubaneshwar (2010), Jodhpur (2010), Kangra (2009), Kannur temporarily (2008) but permanently (2012), and Patna (2008). Shillong in 2008, Srinagar in 2016, Raebareli in 2007, Panchkula momentarily in 2019, and Raebareli permanently in 2022. Daman was added as the most recent node to the NIFT network in 2022.

The NIFT Entrance Exam is considered among the Top 5 Design Entrance Exams in India and is the most sought after among the design aspirants.

What is NIFT Entrance Exam?

The National Institute of Fashion and Technology (NIFT) each year conducts a national level entrance exam to shortlist candidates for enrollment in its various UG and PG level programs. Students can enroll in the B.Des, B.F.Tech, M.Des, and MFM programs after passing the entrance exam. The institution administers the exam at two levels, the Creative Ability Test (CAT), and the General Ability Test (GAT) for offering admission to the students in the many degrees they provide.

 

NIFT Entrance Exam Pattern

Given below is the exam pattern of NIFT entrance:

Papers: There will be two papers conducted, i.e. CAT and GAT (where appropriate).

Medium: The question paper will be in English language.

Duration: The exam time will be 120 minutes (2 hours) for B.Des and M.Des.

Negative Marking: There will be no negative marking.

NIFT Entrance Exam Syllabus

The NIFT Entrance Exam Syllabus is conducted in 2 parts – CAT GAT

CAT – Creative Aptitude Test

GAT – General Ability Test

GAT syllabus for M.Des/B.Des courses will contain topics such as Quantitative Ability, Communication Ability, General Knowledge & Current Affairs, English Comprehension, Analytical Ability.

The CAT test will assess the candidate's conceptual thinking, strength of observation, and design skills.

Additionally, it assesses your ability to use colour and illustrations in creative and novel ways.

Description

Quantitative Ability

This sub-test is designed to test the quantitative ability of the candidates. The subtest consists of questions on Addition, Multiplication, Division, Fractions, Percentage, Rate of Interest, Work and Task, Ratio and Proportion, and Distance.

Communication Ability and English Comprehension

This sub-test is aimed at testing the language ability of the candidates in day-to-day communication in English. It includes questions on synonyms, antonyms, words with corresponding meanings, singular, plural, one-word substitutes, idioms and phrases, correct spellings, comprehend a situation from a given passage, etc.

Analytical Ability and Logical Ability

This sub-test is designed to test the candidate’s capacity for inference and logic from the given information and to evaluate the candidate’s ability to identify the given problem and apply reasoning in solving the core issues of the problem. Concepts and practices of creative and lateral thinking are likely to be useful.

General Knowledge and Current Affairs

This sub-test is designed to test the candidate’s general knowledge and current affairs. Candidates must keep themselves updated with latest happenings.

Syllabus for NIFT Situation Test

Though there is no fixed syllabus for the Situation Test, but the candidate will be evaluated on their  material handling skills, model making skills, creativity, innovativeness and neatness, time management skills as well as written skills to communicate the idea behind the 3D model in their write up. Below are mentioned some important points regarding the NIFT Situation Test.

  • The situation test is a practical examination that assesses a candidate's aptitude for material handling and capacity for creativity in a specific situation and with a specific set of materials.
  • The candidate will need to use the provided materials to create a model or design.
  • It is forbidden to use any materials other than those offered inside the exam facility.
  • The model will be judged on how well it visualises space, makes inventive and imaginative use of the materials provided, arranges its elements, uses colour effectively, and presents itself overall, among other factors.
  • The write-up will be used as an outline of the idea behind the model's construction to check these parameters.
  • The Write-up  must be in English. And the the candidate must not disclose their in any way which will lead to their disqualification.

How to Fill NIFT Application Form

Step 1: Online Registration: To Register enter details like the email, phone number, and on successful verification the candidate’s account will be created.

Step 2: Fill in the Form: Now the applicant must fill out the mandatory fields of the form like the personal details, academic details, contact information, etc, and also must specify the exam center.

Step 3: Uploading Required Documents: Photograph Signature and other required documents have to be uploaded in the given format.

Step 4: Application Fee Payment: The Application fee has to be rendered through online mode with various of banking and fund transfer options that will be available there.

The candidate needs to have passed 10+2 exam from a recognized institute.

OR

Obtained passing grade in the Senior Secondary School Examination conducted by the National Open School with a minimum of five subjects

Completed the General Certificate Education (GCE) Examination (London/Cambridge Sri-Lanka) at the Advanced (A) level/ International Baccalaureate (IB).
