The basic line of difference between NIFT & NID in on the specialisation that they provide.

NID is, by far, the best Indian institute for product designing, product concept development, and design innovation, acclaimed globally for design excellence.NID teaches students about design and art, aesthetic sense and extracts of design engineering. It is focussed on art, aesthetics and product development.

Whereas,

NIFT is India’s leading institute for fashion design and year-on-year the best stylists and fashion designers have emerged from here. NIFT is focused on fabrics, illustration, aesthetic sense, garment construction, styling and the entire technology developing around it. In a sense, the focus is more on apparel and clothing.

Established in 1961, NID is also known as the most difficult design school in India to get into. It has only about 100 seats in its B.Des programmes and a mere 275 seats in its M.Des programmes across its three campuses. The main campus is in Ahmedabad. Later on, the PG campus came up in Gandhinagar and the R&D campus in Bangalore.

Whereas,

NIFT currently provides a four-year Bachelors’ programme, a two-year Masters course, and Ph.D. programmes. Admissions to the graduate and post-graduate programmes are through All-India entrance examinations. NIFT is mostly dedicated to fashion world like Leather, Textiles, Lifestyle, Knitwear, Fashion communication etc. The National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) was set up in 1986 in collaboration with the Fashion Institute, New York, with the objective to deliver high-quality training to aspirants in the aesthetics and technology of fashion and textile. Starting from a small set-up in New Delhi, NIFT has now expanded to 16 centers across India, with the latest one being opened in Srinagar. Every year, NIFT takes in more than 2,700 students, both national and international. The campuses at Chennai, Gandhinagar, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Mumbai were set up in 1995 and that of Bengaluru in 1997.
