The NIFT Situation Test (sometimes also called the Studio Test) is conducted as Stage 2 of the selection process for B.Des (and related design courses) after candidates qualify in the written exams (CAT + GAT). For the 2025 cycle, it was scheduled for 8 June 2025, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 noon.
Once the initial written tests are cleared, the Situation Test becomes a crucial deciding factor. It’s designed to examine a candidate’s creativity, material handling skills, spatial reasoning, observation, imagination, and how they respond to design challenges under time constraints.
In the final merit, performance in the Situation Test carries weight, along with the written scores. Failing or performing poorly in this stage may prevent you from advancing to counselling and admission rounds.
Admit card / hall ticket release for the Situation Test was around 2 June 2025.
The test itself took place on 8 June 2025 (10 AM to 12 noon).
While it’s called a “result date,” the Situation Test often involves on-spot evaluation by the jury, meaning the outcome may be determined immediately after or shortly following the exam.
After that, the final result combining written + stage 2 was declared on 22 June 2025.
Once that is out, the counselling (seat allotment and further rounds) begins. For 2025, registration for counselling was open from 24 June to 1 July.
You have to first clear the CAT + GAT written test and achieve the minimum cutoff or ranking to be shortlisted for the Situation Test.
You’ll be given a design or scenario prompt (for example, design a model out of specific materials), and you’ll have to build a 3D composition using the provided materials within the time limit. The test assesses how you think in three dimensions, how neat and original your approach is, and how you manage limited resources.
Arrive early. The test is strict in timing (2 hours for 10 AM to 12 noon). The admit card will mention your test center and details. Be sure to carry valid photo ID and your admit card.
Once the test is over and results are declared, successful candidates proceed to counselling / seat allocation rounds. You’ll need to register, fill choices, verify documents, and confirm your seat.
